Our Approach
At Three Hive, we adhere to a tested and proven “Three U’s” approach to our evaluations. In a longer-term or developmental evaluation, we may utilize several cycles of the Three U’s.
In the Understand phase, we define who needs to know what, when, and how we will collect, analyze and report on the necessary data. We believe that strong evaluation questions are the key to guiding a quality evaluation. Expect a lot of collaboration in this phase.
Understand
In the Uncover phase, we collect data. Data collection methods are always defined in the Understand phase and often include surveys, interviews, focus groups, and observation. In some projects, your staff supports this phase, and in others, it’s all of us.
Uncover
The Utilize phase is about putting the information to work. We analyze all available data and synthesize findings to create information products that answer your questions. These products are often written reports but maybe memos, presentations, or videos.

We also prioritize a trauma-informed approach, particularly when working with vulnerable sectors. Our commitment to ethical decision-making ensures that we create a safe and supportive environment for all individuals involved in the evaluation process, respecting the unique needs of those affected by trauma and other adverse experiences.

Learn More About Evaluation
Why do people conduct evaluations?
Evaluations are undertaken to systematically answer questions about projects, programs, initiatives, or systems. The purpose varies depending on partners involved, including assessing merit, improving processes, demonstrating accountability, monitoring for early problem identification, and informing development.
What’s the difference between research and evaluation?
While both share methods, research is curiosity-driven, aiming for broad generalizations or theory development. In contrast, evaluation is utilization-driven, focusing on understanding specific projects or programs in real-world settings.
What makes a good evaluator?
Essential traits include credibility, curiosity, communication skills, creativity, and a common-sense orientation. Competency, demonstrated through qualifications and experience, is crucial. Look for professional designations like the Credentialed Evaluator from the Canadian Evaluation Society.
How much does an evaluation cost?
Evaluation costs vary based on factors such as the number of evaluation questions, stakeholder groups, desired involvement levels, reporting formats, and methodology. Typically, evaluation projects start at $30K and can go higher depending on the complexity and scope of the initiative. A credible evaluator can provide informed quotes with detailed information about the specific requirements and goals of your evaluation project.
